The next few months will feature a number of live high definition mixed martial arts and boxing events that are sure to please fight fans. We updated our guide today to add several new Boxing and MMA events.

Some of the highlights include:

UFC on Spike TV: Saturday Night:

“Live” and “Free” are not two words you often see asssociated with the UFC. However, this weekend, on July 19, UFC Fight Night will air at 9:00 PM on Spike TV. The headline bout features UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva fighting Light Heavyweight James Irvin

EliteXC on Showtime and CBS: July 26:

The undercard for the first hour of coverage on Showtime has been updated to reflect that Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva will face Justin Eilers for the EliteXC Heavyweight Title at 8:00 PM ET. Coverage moves to CBS at 9:00 PM, where the headline fight is a rematch between Robbie Lawler and Scott Smith.

An additional EliteXC event on Showtime has also been added for August 15, 2008, featuring a Light Heavyweight bout between Suganuma and Hamman.

HBO High Definition Pay Per View and Other Boxing Events:

Over the next 60 days, HBO will produce two pay per view boxing events, though neither will likely be a huge draw. On July 26, 2008 at 9:00 PM ET, Miguel Cotto will face Antonio Margarito. On September 13, 2008 at 9:00 PM ET Joel Casamayor will face Juan Manual Marquez.

Two free HBO Boxing After Dark (BAD) events were also added for August 2, 2008 at 9:30 PM ET, featuring Zab Judah vs. Joshua Clottey, and September 6, 2008 at 10:15 PM, featuring Diaz vs Katsidis and Juarez vs. Barrios.

There are also three Showtime Championship Boxing events on the schedule that will be broadcast in high definition on August 2nd, September 13th and October 11th, all at 9:00 PM ET.

Check out the Boxing High Definition Schedule and Mixed Martial Arts High Definition Schedule for complete listings and further updates.

Hot off the All-Star break, Fox has announced the Game of the Week for July 19th. In case you’ve forgotten, every Saturday at 3:30 PM EST during the MLB season, Fox airs 3 games in three different US markets. In theory, this regionalized distribution gives each market a chance to see the game most relevant to their local interests. That said, word on the streets is that Fox doesn’t always get it right.

Right or wrong, at least it’s in HD.

Here’s the way Fox has decided to break down the markets and distribute the games for July 19th at 3:30 PM EST.

The week of technological disappointment continues here at HDSportsGuide.com, as we see one of our favourite sporting events fall into the pits of SD up-conversion. The British Open Golf Tournament, scheduled to begin Thursday the 17th will not be in High Definition on TNT or ABC.

On the bright side of things, TNT and ABC are planning to cover the British Open well, despite the lack of HD. ABC will be using 20 cameras to film the action, and TNT will be using the 52 camera feed supplied by the Chaps at the BBC.

One of the cameras ABC will be using is a Steadicam mounted to a Segway, which will follow golfers around the British Open. Additionally, ABC will be deploying its super slow mo camera, X-MO. All in all it should be a nice presentation, but disappointingly not high definition.

UPDATE 7/18/2008: Looks like there may be high definition British Open coverage available in 2009, so keep your fingers crossed.

The 2008 MLB All Star Game will be played on Tuesday, July 15th, broadcast on Fox in High Definition. Fox has exclusive rights to the game, as well as pre-game coverage, including a Hall of Fame ceremony starting at 8 PM EST. First Pitch is scheduled for 8:40 PM.

Fox has pulled out all the stops for its high definition coverage of the MLB All Star Game. Coverage includes 21 high definition cameras, also featuring Fox’s “HD Diamond Cams,” which are ground-level cameras, shooting home plate and the field from the foul-lines. NASCAR fans should recognize this view from “Digger” the Gopher Camera used during this season’s races. DirecTV will be providing aerial blimp shots, also planned to be in HD.

To compliment its 720p High Definition coverage, Fox will be using over 80 microphones around the stadium, plus additional ones placed on the players, umps and managers. Joe Buck and Tim McCarver get the announcer’s microphones.

You can tell it is an “off” year for the Yankees, since 21% of the country will get the alternate game, Chicago Cubs vs. St. Louis Cardinals. So I am sure a lot of Cubbie fans will have a few words to say about the regional coverage breakdown.

The Wimbledon Semifinals begin today and the Championship continues through the weekend with the Women’s Final on Saturday at 9:00 AM ET and Men’s Final on Sunday at 9:00 AM ET on NBC High Definition.

UPDATE: The alignment of the stars held up… Serena and Venus Williams face off for the Ladies Final on Saturday and Roger Federer will face Rafael Nadal on Sunday in the Men’s Final.

The Women’s bracket is aligning for an All-Williams Wimbledon Final on Saturday morning. Barring an upset in the semifinals on Friday, the Men’s Wimbledon Final will likely feature another match-up between Nadal and Federer.

On Thursday morning, the Women’s Semifinals start on ESPN2 (broadcast in upconverted wide-screen standard definition) with Elena Dementieva (No. 5) vs. Venus Williams (No. 7). Coverage shifts to NBC at 12:00 PM ET featuring Jie Zheng vs. Serena Williams (No. 6).

On July 4th, the Men’s Wimbledon Semifinal coverage will be exclusively on NBC starting at 9:00 AM ET, which means all of the tennis matches will be broadcast in true 1080i high definition. The matchups will feature Roger Federer (No. 1) vs. Marat Safin and Rafael Nadal (No. 2) vs. the winner of this morning’s Schuettler/Clement Quarterfinal match.

The Wimbledon Women’s Final will air Saturday, with coverage beginning at 9:00 AM ET, and the Men’s Final will air on Sunday.

The full 2008 Summer Olympic Schedule has not been announced yet, but the plans for broadcast are getting clearer. Check out the shakedown so far.

The daily 2008 Summer Olympic Schedule has not been announced yet, but with the games set to begin in a little over 30 days, the broadcast plans are getting clearer. Here is the shakedown so far.

NBC Universal has the exclusive rights to the Olympics. They will produce over 3,600 hours of Summer Olympic coverage, all in high definition. The HDTV broadcasts will be carried on NBC, USA and Universal HD, but it remains unclear what time slots will be carried on each network. As we discover information, we will update our 2008 Summer Olympic Schedule.

NBC will be offering downloadable video coverage of the Summer Games on-line. Although the streaming coverage will not be true high definition, we thought it important to mention anyway. However, there are two huge draw backs. First, if an event is covered on TV, it will not be available on the internet until after it has broadcast. Second, only users of Microsoft Vista will be able to download the necessary software to watch the internet Olympic Coverage. So everyone using Vista and willing to download more software can get all their info here.

Has NBC not learned anything from the CBS streaming coverage of the NCAA Tournament, or ESPN 360?

Stay close to HDSportsGuide for continued updates to the Summer Olympics Guide and news posts.
