Confirmed all NFL on CBS in HD (thru Week 3…)
In a tale as sordid as Brett Favre’s return, the saga of CBS’s plans for a full NFL HD schedule continues.
Though unconfirmed rumors have been swirling since May that CBS would produce all NFL games in high definition this year, we at HDSportsGuide have been holding out for something (anything) official from CBS before adding the games to our NFL schedule.
Well, today we added all games during the first thee weeks of the 2008 CBS NFL season, which includes two weeks (2 and 3) where eight games will be carried in high definition!
This certainly contradicts the information we got before from a contact at CBS, that the network was only planing to produce 6 to 7 games in HD each week. After we posted that information, KenH at AVSForum.com looked into his magic 8 ball and told everyone that CBS would be producing all games in high definition this year, but our contact continued to indicate he was unaware of any such changes, and no official word was released by CBS.
Well, on the eve of the Olympics, CBS has quietly posted posted an NFL schedule at CBSSportsLine.com, which has indications for HD games through the first 8 weeks of the season, including weeks 2 and 3 where eight games will be broadcast by CBS. So, this appears to be the evidence we have all been craving and hoping for! (And your humble servants at HDSportsGuide.com now know that the KenH’s magic8ball should always be trusted over the information provided by PR contacts)
However, along with our excitement, the CBS NFL schedule still leaves some room for questions. While all games through Week 3 are listed as HD on CBS, Week 4 only lists 4 out of 5 scheduled games as HD, Week 5 only lists 5 out of the 6 CBS games, and Week 6 only lists 4 out of 5 scheduled games in HD???
Why can’t the folks at CBS get their act together and just issue a press release about the HD plans for the 2008 NFL season, like Fox did?
Thanks to d2001dstanley for the CBS link.
And mea culpa to the wise KenH and Ben Drawbaugh at EngadgetHD.
Here are the complete listings of CBS NFL games that will be broadcast in HD the first three weeks of the season (or at least we think they will…)

CBS’s problem in the past has been with HD at 4pm. When they aren’t running an NFL DoubleHeader they needed to leave one of their HD control rooms for their primetime schedule to be broadcast to East Coast affiliates in HD.
Might the problem in the weeks beyond week 3 be too many 4pm games and the weekends in question not being CBS double header weekends?

Brian,
Yeah, but CBS upgraded much of their infrastructure this year, hence CBS news in HD now, with 60 minutes right around the corner and lets hope the issue you mention.
As for this news, I’m excited that I no longer have to hear the complainers, but being a fan of an NFC team, it really doesn’t affect me.
Thanks for the update all the same!

I’m impressed with CBS’ golf coverage - they even did two tournaments on the same day a few weeks ago, all in HD.
Does FOX have all HD games… I don’t think so. Plus their PQ isn’t comparable anyways.
CBS is the leader in HD.

FOX has all of their NFL games in HD for 2008 and has had more NFL games in HD than CBS has for the past several years now. So no, CBS is not the “leader in HD” at all.

CBS was years ahead of Fox in terms of the first HD NFL game. It will be nice to have all HD games for the 2008 season and beyond.

It is sad there at least 7 NFL games tonight and nobody is showing any of them, especially the Jet game. I thought someone would show that game because of Brett Farve. Hm!

The Jet game is in HD on NFL network.

CBS should change their name to GAY. Every NFL game Ive watched for my home team (Houston Texans)has been in HD BUT is not full screen, instead it is only the middle with the 2 bars to the outside. While FOX has an awsome PQ and it takes up the whole screen. Can we make a petition or something? FOX kills CBS in PQ,but my team doesnt have coverage through them unforunately. THat charlie myers guy must work for GAY…I mean CBS.Sincerely, frustrated football fan

Joey Boy,
Some of the Texans game were actually in plain ol’ Standard Definition TV at standard/legacy 4:3 aspect ratio converted to the HDTV format (upconverted). Your station airs in HD format but not all programming coming from said station or CBS originates in HD.
Both HDSportsGuide and KenH confirming CBS going all-HD now should ease your fears. Barring technical difficulties, seeing any NFL game with black bars from a HDTV station will be a thing of the past.

Today’s Bengals game was upconverted from standard def. I really hate having to watch games on CBS, almost to the point of just listening to it on the radio.

“Today’s Bengals game was upconverted from standard def.”
This is incorrect. CBS does not upconvert any NFL games. If the game was 16:9, it was HD, unless your local station made a mistake.
