Coverage Maps for September 27 College Football
For the second week this year, ESPN is regionally broadcasting both the 3:30 College Football Games and the 8 PM games on Saturday. See the maps below to determine what games are being broadcast in your area, which channel, and whether they’ll be in HD or not.
Unfortunately, ESPN is only broadcasting two of its four 3:30 ABC games in high definition. Wisconsin vs Michigan and Colorado vs FSU will air on ABC at 3:30 in the highlighted regions in HD, but Arkansas vs Texas and Fresno State vs UCLA are relegated to standard definition purgatory.
As for the reverse mirror, where ESPN airs a game not being regionally picked up by ABC, only one of those two games will be broadcast in high definition. Most of the country will be able to see Wisconsin at Michigan in high def on ESPN at 3:30, but the areas in blue will have to watch Colorado vs Florida State on ESPN in SD.
The two games being aired on ABC will both be in HD, but ESPN does not extend the reverse mirror policy to any game besides the 3:30 Saturday afternoon game, so if you’re seeing Illinois vs Penn State on ABC, you’ll be unable to catch Virginia Tech play Nebraska. ESPN will be carrying Alabama vs Georgia at 8 PM.
Good luck and enjoy the games, here’s the maps:

Can someone please explain to me the reasoning for blacking out only the HD feed of these games? I understand blackouts, but when you offer the game on the SD feed, but not the HD feed, it seems to defeat the purpose of said blackout.

Colorado-Florida State is not in HD on ESPN due to satellite capacity. Also the game is being played in Jacksonville.
BTW, ABC games not shown on your local ABC station are available through ESPN GamePlan.

Arrrggh - why is it soooo hard to ever get a Va. Tech game in Michigan! Why oh why can ESPN not do reverse mirror at 8pm on Saturday??? All week I was counting on the reverse mirror policy, then I read this article!!! Before we had the baby we’d go to the sports bars for this, but with a 7 month old I’m now relegated to the computer when I can’t get the game on expanded basic cable. Call me old fashioned, but I want to watch my team on the TV without having a bazillion dollar cable or satellite package. I mean c’mon, it is the Hokies v the Huskers - two traditional powerhouses with a combined 6-1 record, not Fresno State v Central Florida. Sigh…

ESPN has had its own Saturday-night games for at least 20 years. That’s why Reverse Mirror is not used for Saturday Night Football telecasts on ABC.

Gillmo, You are in the heart of Big 10 country! That is why! I live in the Washington DC area and we have to see Va Tech! I want PSU! This area has the second largest PSU allumni assoc. of anywhere in the country and we have to see Va. Tech! PLEEEEEEEEEASE someone at ESPN/ABC fix this before Sat. night! This is absurd!

Please explain why the Phoenix area is getting the Va. Tech/Nebraska game primetime rather than Penn State/Illinois game? Tucson is getting Penn State/Illinois which has a much smaller fan base of Illinois and Penn State followers. Apparently ABC doesn’t know that the Phoenix area has the 2nd largest number of Penn State Alumni living there in the country. Thank goodness I am able to get the game on ESPN Gameplan but have to fork over $22 for the day to my cable company. Do your homework ABC before you set up your program schedule.

I live in St. Augustine and have 20+ friends from PA, all PSU fans. The dividing line on the map is just cutting us off from the game. It just dosn’t make any sense televising VT and Nebraska in Jacksonville. Im not playing favorites, we are all hokies….great school. Penn State and VT are almost equally far away, and PSU and Illinois are both ranked schools.
I just see this as a way to push ESPN and their pay to watch diabolical scheme…..

To Steve S: Did it ever occur to you that Phoenix also has many more Nebraska/Va Tech alumni than Tuscon? Does Penn St. have a radio affiiate in Phoenix? Nebraska does. Almost everyone in the state of Nebraska that has retired to AZ cheers for the Huskers as there are not other FCS schools or pro sports teams to follow back home. That certainly in not the case in PA. Also, Nebraska has always recruited Arizona and currently has seven players from that state on their roster. I think ABC did do their homework and the good folks of Arizona are lucky to not have the big 10 shoved down their throats.
