MLB Network HD to be carried by DirecTV Jan 1

The MLB Network will be available in high definition when it launches on January 1, 2009 at 6:00 PM. (At least for DirecTV customers).

DirecTV is the first satellite or cable provider to confirm that they make the high definition feed available from day.

We’re not real sure why DirecTV picked up this HD simulcast, as the MLB Network schedule appears to be a whole of nothing for at least the first month. (Unless a re-broadcast of Don Larsen’s 1956 World Series perfect game is how you wish to spend New Years Night.)

For the 2009 season, MLB Network has the rights to offer 26 weekly Thursday Night Baseball games.
