NFL Draft HD Coverage on ESPN (sort of)

Since we received confirmation from the NFL Network that they will not be broadcasting the Draft in HD, we have been looking for information about ESPN HD’s plans.

Well… it does not appear the coverage will be shot in HD, but (based on pre-draft coverage), at least they are making good use of the screen real estate.

ESPN Draft Day Screen Shot

ESPN HD Draft Day coverage so far has mainly featured an SD pictured wrapped in HD graphics and draft information. The screen layout is similar to what is available on the new ESPNEWS HD. Given the information overload we all seem to crave on Draft Day, this appears to be a good compromise between the desire to make use of the HD feed and the fact that most of the highlight films for draft picks are in SD.

Looking at the NFL Network draft day coverage, they appear to be doing straight SD coverage wrapped in sidebars with no useful information at all. That is so 2006…

If I had to choose between HD shots of the analysts covering the draft and an SD picture wrapped in stats and other news… hands down I choose the SD picture with the stats. However, I still wish I could have both (HD picture with the extra stats and info wrapped around the edges).
