In the shadow of Major League Baseball’s opening day, the NFL has announced the 2008 Kickoff Weekend primetime schedule, which will include games on Thursday night and Sunday night on NBC, and a Monday Night Football doubleheader on ESPN HD.

In keeping with the now-4-year-old tradition of opening the NFL season on the home field of the reigning Superbowl champs, the 2008 NFL schedule will start with the New York Giants vs the Washington Redskins at Giants Stadium. Kickoff is at 7:00 PM EST on Thursday September 4 on NBC in 1080i high definition.

NBC’s first Sunday Night Football game pits the Indianapolis Colts against the Chicago Bears at 8:15 PM EST, Sunday September 7. The game marks the first regular-season game to be played in Lucas Oil Stadium, new home to the Colts.

The season premier for ESPN Monday Night Football in 2008 will again feature a double-header. Minnesota Vikings play the Green Bay Packers at 7:00 PM EST on ESPN HD, followed by Denver vs Oakland at 10:15 PM EST.

Why are these guys broadcasting in 720p? I’ll take it over 480, but these guys need to get on the bandwagon and give us what we want— 1080p!
