November 22 College Football Coverage Maps

ABC and ESPN’s reverse mirror this week offers up lots of HD and little variety. ABC will air 3 games at 3:30, 2 in HD and 1 which will be broadcasted to a large majority of US markets. ESPN will be broadcasting 1 HD game at 3:30, but nearly the whole country will be receiving it over the SD version.

On ABC, Michigan State vs Penn State will air in HD to a large portion of America, notwithstanding the south-east, parts of New York & New Jersey and parts of California. Most of these areas will receive Boston College vs Wake Forest game, but those in California are unfortunately stuck watching Cal take on Stanford in standard definition.

ESPN will air two games at 3:30, only one of which will be in HD. Fortunately, most of the country will receive Boston College vs Wake Forest, which will be in HD. Areas previously mentioned as receiving the BC and Cal games on ABC will be getting Michigan State vs Penn in standard def on ESPN.

This is a tripleheader weekend for ABC.

Michigan-Ohio State is a national telecast in HD at noon ET/9 AM PT. Texas Tech-Oklahoma is a national telecast in HD at 8 PM ET/5 PM PT.

Why is the MSU/PSU game on STD DEF ESPN???? It is shown on ABC-HD in most markets, but for those that have to use ESPN, we have to use the SD channel? WHY????????????? ESPN-HD will have some fill-in crap. Why not show it on both????
Pisses me off because I see ZERO reason for it. I pay but HD, I want HD.

Hmmn? #14 BYU at #7 Utah (Good vs. Evil) I know they’re not major markets but what the heck? :)

    Go Utah! F BYU !!!

    Smitty,
ESPN-HD only has one national feed, unlike the standard def version which can be split in so many areas. Maybe it deals with satellite bandwith or what not, but for the majority of time, ESPN is only transmitting one game at a time, so it might not feel worth it to dedicate another feed just for the few times a year that it does.

The reason that ESPN-HD has the ACC game (instead of the Big 10 game) is that nearly the whole country is already getting the Big Ten game in HD on ABC. I know it doesn’t help that much, but a few years ago, if you lived out of the Big Ten territory, you would either have to goto a bar or watch the game for $22 on ESPN Gameplan before the Big Ten signed a contract making its 3:30 games effectively national.

Incidentally, the reason that the PAC 10 game is in standard def is for a similar reason as ABC only has capability to transmit 2 HD feeds at one time. Unlike Fox or CBS, due their NFL simultaneous feeds, ABC (and probably NBC, but I”m not sure) has no need more than 2 HD feeds at at time (East and West).

  5. Tom Says:

You forgot to mention BTN’s games again. They’re doing 3 HD games this weekend. I don’t know why (I guess because its the last week of the season), but they’re not doing a noon game as usual. Instead they’re doing 2 games at 3:30, then 1 at 7:00.

  6. Tom Says:

In market trumps out of market smitty.

Check ESPN Game Plan for MSU/PSU in HD.

  7. Tom Says:

Mony the official spelling is Big Ten
