Official Confirmation: CBS All-HD for NFL (Sort of)
After months of speculation, rumors and a lot of people with crossed fingers, CBS has finally spoken up and confirmed that they will be producing all games in high definition.
However, it is possible that all CBS NFL games may not actually be seen in their entirety in high definition.
According to Ken Aagaard, EVP of Engineering:
“Our issue right now is that we may not be able to distribute completely in HD. It depends on our networking. There are occasions where there will be issues. For example, in a double-header, a late game may start in 4×3 until we can free up distribution equipment from the earlier game to get the HD signal out. It’s very possible we will have no problems all year. Still, there’s a multitude of circumstances were we can’t transmit in HD, and these may surface during the season.”
CBS indicates that they are taking steps to see that this will not be a problem in the future. That way they can meet their contractual obligation with the NFL to do all HD by 2009.
Although all games will be produced and filmed in HD, for some reason, CBS will continue to feature halftime highlights in standard definition. They will not be redoing their videotape-highlight area until next summer, so no HD halftime clips on CBS. No worries,….certainly Fox and ESPN will have the CBS clips in HD, right?

Weren’t all CBS games produced in HD last year as well? I remember seeing HD clips of games distributed in SD on NBC.

They were only producing 5-6 per week in HD last year. They probably just weren’t showing highlights of the games that didn’t make the HD cut??

I don’t the the Nov 16th Houston/Colts game in HD for CBS. I thought all NFL games were in HD this year?
