NBC Olympics to be Produced Totally in HD

The NBC Summer Olympic Games in Beijing will be produced totally in high definition, but it is still unclear exactly how many hours of HD coverage will be broadcast in the United States. NBC has already announced that they will shoot a record 3,600 hours during the Olympics, which run from August 8 to 24, 2008. High definition Olympics broadcasts will be available on NBC HD, USA HD and Universal HD, but additional programming will be carried in SD on MSNBC and CNBC.

Bob Dixon, NBC Olympics’ director of sound, was quoted as stating, “[t]his is the first time the games will be produced totally in high definition with 5.1 discrete channels of audio.” NBC plans to send six different channels of audio along with the high definition pictures to the United States.

  1. Arnold Says:

I always look forward to the Olympics, then lose interest as they start, since you can never tell what will be on when, and what will be live. Huge time differences like this make it tough to care.

  2. Phil Says:

With a 12 hour offset between NYC and Beijing, I don’t care how much is in HD, as it will all be irrelevant by the time we get to see it.

  3. Mel Says:

I agree and here on the West Coast we get the Prime Time delayed another three hours. Many of the marquee events are shown after 11PM here. We know the results long before and interest is nil at least for me…I’ll wait for the Bud Greenspan documentary..
