U.S. Open in 2009 to air on ESPN2 / Tennis Ch.

Starting in 2009, the U.S. Open Tennis Championship will be shown on ESPN 2 and Tennis Channel, instead of USA Network. According to Multichannel News, a new deal is expected to be announced today, with ESPN2 airing 100 hours of live coverage and Tennis Channel airing 60 hours a year. The deal will go from 2009 through 2014.

CBS remains the over-the-air carrier for the Tennis U.S. Open Championship, with approximately 40 hours of live coverage for the grand slam event. Last year CBS entered into a new five year deal.

USA Network, who has carried the tournament on cable for 25 years, is attempting to exit the sports business. With the launch of their HD channel, the final year of coverage on USA Network should be available in high definition.

Under the new deal, ESPN2 will broadcast live tennis coverage weekday coverage during the afternoons and primetime. Tennis Channels coverage will include primetime coverage on Saturday and Sunday nights over labor day weekend, in addition to other live coverage, highlights and match encores.
